Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) routers arrived in stores through 2025–26. The promises: 4× faster speeds, lower lag, and connections that don't drop when the whole family is online.

• Real-world gains: If you have gigabit internet, Wi-Fi 7 can actually deliver it wirelessly — older Wi-Fi 6 often topped out around 600–700 Mbps.
• Multi-Link Operation: Your phone uses two frequency bands at once, so video calls don't stutter when someone starts a big download.
• Who needs it: Gamers, 4K streamers in multiple rooms, home offices with video calls, and smart homes with 30+ devices.
• Who doesn't: If your internet is under 300 Mbps or you live alone — Wi-Fi 6 is plenty. Spend the difference on a mesh system instead; coverage beats speed.

2026 tip: Wi-Fi 7 phones and laptops are now mainstream (iPhone 17, Galaxy S26, all new laptops). If you're replacing a 5+ year old router, buying Wi-Fi 7 today means you won't think about routers again for 7 years.
