How to Replace Ink or Toner Cartridges (Step by Step)
Before you start
Have your replacement cartridge ready and sealed until the moment you install it — exposed ink nozzles and toner drums degrade with air exposure.
Inkjet cartridges
- Open the printer's front access panel. The cartridge carriage usually moves to the center automatically.
- Press down gently on the old cartridge until it clicks and releases, then pull it straight out.
- Remove the orange/pink protective tape from the new cartridge's contacts — don't touch the copper contacts or the nozzle.
- Insert at an angle, then press down until it clicks into place.
- Close the panel. Most printers run a brief alignment/cleaning cycle automatically — let it finish before printing.
Laser toner cartridges
- Open the top or front cover and pull out the old toner cartridge by its handle.
- Gently shake the new cartridge side to side 5-6 times to redistribute toner evenly before removing its seal.
- Pull the sealing strip/tape straight out in one motion — don't stop halfway.
- Slide the cartridge in until it seats and the cover closes without resistance.
If prints look streaky afterward
Run the printer's built-in cleaning/alignment utility (usually in the printer's own menu or in the manufacturer's printer software on your computer) before assuming the cartridge is faulty.
