How to Print Double-Sided (Duplex Printing)
If your printer has automatic duplex
- Open the print dialog's Properties/Preferences.
- Find the "Two-Sided" or "Duplex" setting and turn it on.
- Choose the binding edge β "Long edge" for a document you'll read like a book (most common), "Short edge" for something you'll flip like a notepad.
If your printer doesn't have automatic duplex
- Print the odd-numbered pages first β most print dialogs have an "odd pages only" option under page range settings.
- Once that batch finishes, take the stack exactly as it came out (don't reorder it) and place it back in the tray β flipped according to your printer's manual (this varies by model; some want the stack flipped top-to-bottom, others flipped left-right).
- Print the even-numbered pages. Do a short 2-page test run the first time to confirm which way your specific printer wants the paper flipped before committing a long document.
Common mistake
The most common double-sided printing problem is pages coming out with the back side upside-down relative to the front. If that happens, your printer's binding edge setting (long vs. short) needs to be switched.
